Crime & Safety Specialist

Position Key Responsibilities
The Safety Specialist is a part-time two-year contracted position that reports directly to the Community Engagement Outreach Manager. The Community Outreach Manager is responsible for conducting outreach and engagement of residents and developing appropriate programming for youth, individuals and families. The Safety Specialist will assist the Community Outreach Manager with outreach and engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

Engagement – To increase crime prevention through education, involvement and advocacy of key neighborhood stakeholders
• Conduct outreach and engagement of residents, businesses and neighborhood groups
• Coordinate with existing community partners, including, but not limited to Kansas City Police – Central Patrol, Community Response Team (CRT), First Call, and Urban Neighborhood Initiative
• Identify new community partners that operate within the neighborhood, including faith-based, community organizations and schools.
• Attend the following monthly meetings: Ivanhoe Crime & Safety, Community Response Team, and Violence Free KC
• Work with and engage Ivanhoe’s Crime & Safety Committee members
• Assist with developing, scheduling and facilitating workshops, training sessions and other meetings.

Assessments
• Engage 39th Street businesses and evaluate their properties using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) practices
• Assist with implementing assessments, surveys and evaluation tools
• Assist with data collection

Required Experience
• High School diploma required, bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience preferred
• Knowledge and experience in community development strategies, particularly involving safety and crime prevention/education
• Experience building and maintaining relationships in culturally diverse, low-income neighborhood environments
• Experience leading policy discussions and advocating at city and/or state levels desired
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Creative, entrepreneurial, and solution-oriented approaches.

Compensation
This is a two-year, part-time contracted position, renewable in one-year increments. Position offers between 20-30 hours per week as negotiated.
